What Are CrossFit Shoes? Why Proper CrossFit Shoes Are Key

CrossFit is intense.

It is a whole new breed of workout goers and gym rats that want to workout at maximum intensity at maximum capacity for of course, you guessed it, maximum results.

Personally, I have only been doing CrossFit for about half a year, but I am starting to accustom myself to the level of fierceness that makes up the CrossFit industry and am even starting to like putting my body through extreme physical exertion and overcoming my limiting beliefs to trust that I can accomplish any task put in front of me.

Still not sure what CrossFit is?  This one minute video provides a glimpse into what CrossFit represents and attempts to accomplish.

But that is likely not why you are here. Likely you are here because you are a new or now regular CrossFit attender and want to know what exactly are CrossFit shoes?  What separates a CrossFit shoe from that of any other shoe, like a running shoe or basketball shoe? Those are the questions that we are looking to answer today.

In this article we are going to break down why CrossFit shoes are important and what shoes for CrossFit must have and secondly, we will provide a few recommendations from our favorite CrossFit brands at the end of the article.  But first, let’s look at the anatomy of a CrossFit shoe.

What Is a CrossFit Shoe??? Breaking Down the Essential Elements

A good CrossFit shoe must be able to withstand the rigors of all different types of CrossFit movements. Some of the common movements include squats, deadlines, sprints, box jumps, and even scaling a long rope.  Basically, the movements to be a fit human being (ever see those athletes in the CrossFit games?  CrossFit is the ultimate workout.

A true CrossFit shoe can provide support during heavy lifts and jumps, but also have the versatility to not be a hindrance during runs or rope climbs. Thus CrossFit shoes are generally heavier and more protective than a running shoe. The sole of the shoe is normally broader than other shoes and usually more supportive and stable than that of a running shoe.

Best Nike Shoes For CrossFit, Best Nikes For CrossFit

Often times, CrossFit shoes have unique, cool features like the Reebok CrossFit Nano 5, which has the RopePro carbon rubber that helps provide traction and helps you get a good grip on rope climbs.

Or take for instance, the Nike Metcon 2 Synthetic Trainers that have a Flywire midsole technology that helps lock the foot into place and helps prevent blisters and ensures comfort.  And if you can accomplish those difficult, handstand pushups, the zero-drag heel helps ensure smoothness next to the wall.

So these are just a few of the reasons that CrossFit shoes are different than the norm.  Below we simplify further what separates a CrossFit shoe from the rest of crowd.

Looking for our recommendations?  Either check out this in depth guide or head down to the bottom of this article for our top 3 CrossFit sneaker recommendations.

Main Difference Between a CrossFit Shoe and Running Shoe

First, it is important to point out that CrossFit is an offshoot of cross training and thus CrossFit shoes offer similar features to a cross training shoe. However, as you would expect, CrossFit shoes are more specialized to meet the demands of CrossFit workouts, or WODs (CrossFit workout of the day).

What Is A CrossFit Shoe?, Why CrossFit Shoes

Typically, a good CrossFit shoe would be more supportive and a little heavier than a running shoe. The lifts are heavy and the movements are quick and demanding. They must provide the proper support on the ankles to prevent injury and thus the minimalist running shoes really aren’t recommended here.

One of the biggest complaints people have with CrossFit is the injuries. But if the training is coached and the lifts are done correctly then you have a good chance of avoiding injury. But don’t expect to walk into any Box (CrossFit gym) with any old shoes.

Running and jogging is one long, continuous exercise while CrossFit involves lots of quick cuts and lateral movements.  Running shoes generally don’t have great traction as you are traveling in one linear path and must be lightweight to make the running smooth and effortless.

On the other hand, CrossFit involves lots of different movements in all different directions and some serious heavy lifting (especially on max days). You must have the support to withstand tall box jumps and comfort on all those double unders with the jump rope. Thus, the CrossFit shoes are generally heavier and more supportive and often times have unique features for things like rope climbs.

Both shoes must be durable to withstand the severities of continuous exercise, but if you are serious about CrossFit, we suggest you get serious about your shoes. Sure, you can you make it by with running shoes, but eventually the fluffiness of the running shoes might catch up to you.

What About Basketball Shoes?  Do They Work For CrossFit???

Lastly, you might be thinking basketball shoes might be able to work for your CrossFit workouts. We generally recommend staying away from that assumption. The makeup of the shoe can be similar and the movements comparable with lots of sprints, running, and jumping. However, basketball shoes are generally bulkier and are often high-tops which restrict some movement in the ankles.  Quite frankly, they are just not that comfortable to workout in.

What Are CrossFit Shoes?

CrossFit shoes have a nice, flat sole which allows your foot to make even contact with the floor during heavy lifts.  How many basketball shoes do you know of that have flat soles?  Maybe the old school Converse shoes (see picture on the right), but those are the only ones I can think of.

The main issue is basketball shoes are made to provide excellent cushion on high jumps which is great, but can often take away from the all important lifting components in CrossFit.  Generally, we recommend staying clear of basketball shoes as we believe they are often times overly cushiony at the heel.

Why Wear CrossFit Shoes? A Case to Buy Specialized Shoes

Why Wear CrossFit Shoes?

I once heard the analogy: have you ever tried lifting a barbell on a mattress?  Next time you are at home go stand on your mattress and see how comfortable it is to lift something heavy.  It's so difficult it might as well be a CrossFit WOD.  Likewise, we want a supportive shoe that doesn’t restrict us in running and is comfortable and stable enough to be used during lifting movements.

So, needless to say, we recommend you buying a CrossFit specific shoe when you are working out.

Makes sense right?  Can you make it by using running or basketball shoes during workouts at the box? Sure, I did it for a couple months, but I think you will be amazed at the improvement and enjoyment of the workout when you get the right shoes.  I, for one, will never go back.

Ready to make the jump and purchase your first pair of CrossFit shoes? Check out our concise recommendations below.

The Best Nike Shoes For CrossFit: Comparing America’s Favorite Brand

Ever since the early 60’s when Phil Knight founded Nike, it has for a long time been a staple in athletic apparel and equipment. It is arguably the most reputable brand in footwear and is always a name you can trust when looking for a solid pair of sports sneakers. Their shoes tend to always lead the way in technology and features, just as Apple tends to do the same in smartphones and laptops.

Nike Metcon 2 Cross Training Shoes

Nike is truly an iconic brand. They have proven time and time again to release some of the most stylish, yet durable and comfortable shoes on the market.

Personally, I look to Nike first when buying a pair of athletic shoes as I value the comfort and support that their shoes provide. Also, it helps that I do enjoy the cutting edge designs that Nike offers as it is clear that Nike puts just as much emphasis on the overall look and style of the shoe as they do the superb features and quality that is the backbone of the shoe.

Reebok is the brand name behind CrossFit in apparel and events (CrossFit Games) and does offer some excellent shoes for CrossFit.  But when selecting the best CrossFit shoes in the industry, I seem to always go back to Nike.

The DiamondFlex outsole technology makes all the lateral, quick movements in different directions ideal for CrossFit or any lifting activity.

Keep in mind, the tongue is sewn into the shoe to ensure a snugger fit. This is ideal for an athletic shoe as we want to prevent as much movement as possible within the shoe. On the whole, Nike's tend to run about a half size smaller than other leading brands.

Nike Free Trainer 3.0 V4 Training Shoe

Nike Men's Free Trainer 3.0 V4 Training Shoe

These are yet another great pair of Nike Free for CrossFits for those looking for a clean, minimalist design and support.

They are extremely lightweight which makes them ideal for running activities (yes, this is a big part of CrossFit) while still offering the right support and protection for the heavy lifting. For those looking for a nice, lightweight and versatile training and running shoe, we believe this is your go to shoe.

HONORABLE MENTION

Nike Metcon 1 Cross Trainer

Nike Men's Metcon 1 Cross Trainer

This was the original design from our Top Choice so we decided to give it our honorable mention after reviewing it thoroughly.  Chances are you can still get these shoes at a little bit of a discount from the newest Metcons which also makes this a "Best Value" candidate.

Again, these excellent shoes feature the outstanding Flyware technology to help support the arch of your feet while still ensuring a nice, lightweight feel. It has a firm, flat heel and wider sole which as mentioned really, really helps out with those heavy lifts above your head.

For those looking for a great addition to their workouts and prefer a wider pair, these just might be what you were looking for.

To Sum It All Up

We believe that the best CrossFit shoes Nike makes surpasses the competition including CrossFit’s top brand, Reebok.  Not only done Nike produce the best athletic shoes on the market, but also some of the best CrossFit trainers you can buy.  In fact, we rated the Nike Metcon 2’s as our #1 CrossFit shoe.

However, we wanted to make sure to take into consideration each ones budget and offered some equally great options for those looking for something cheaper or minimal. This latest upgrade to the Nano line matches all the initial hype. Not only do the shoes look cool, but they are extremely comfortable to put on and break in. They have just a slight heel lift and provide minimalist padding to ensure support on big lifts like deadlifts and squats.

Many have found the tongue to be significantly more comfortable than the earlier Nanos as they have a nice anatomical shaped fit.

Overall, we find the Nano series to be a perfect blend of workmanship and style. We believe you too will find these to be just the shoes you were looking for to help you push through your next WOD.

Women’s Version

Reebok Women's CrossFit Nano 6.0

Again, we loved the latest specializations that put to this shoe and the comfortability factor and the ankle support is without equal.

Another great benefit is that they don’t seem to be a hindrance to the running portions of the workout as they are not too bulky and don’t seem to show too much discomfort.

Many female users have found these to be a significant upgrade over its predecessor 5.0. For this reason, we believe it is worth shelling out some cash for these updated Reebok CrossFit sneakers.

Reebok CrossFit Lifter 2.0 Training Shoe

Reebok Women's Lifter 2.0 Weight-Lifting Shoe

The Lifter 2.0 is one of Reebok’s most popular shoes retailing online. The workhorse of our list, the Lifter 2.0 mens and womens shoes is a stable shoe with a lot of room in the toe box and great ankle support.

Any CrossFitter with a lower leg injury will appreciate the sturdy upper and the solid, boot-like feel.

These shoes are perfect for slower, heavier workouts offering great support on heavy lifts and excellent stability.  Durable and attractive with a sleek center strap, the Lifter 2.0 is a sensible choice for a training shoe.

Women’s Version

This is such a great shoe that Reebok features this shoe for women as well. It comes with a nice breathable mesh and has the same secure strap locks that the male version offers.

Overall, an excellent offering from Reebok as it values the three components of style, comfortability, and support despite being relatively lightweight.

Reebok CrossFit Lifter Plus Training Shoe

Reebok Men's R CrossFit Lifter Plus Training Shoe

At first glance, with its flashy appearance, the Lifter Plus could pass as a soccer boot. Its design of a glossy heel base, leather outer and ‘CrossFit’-emblazoned upper strap, speaks of the Lifter’s confidence.

As the name suggests, this shoe is designed with weightlifting specifically in mind.

So while it may not offer broader uses in the gym, its solid base and breathable toe box make it perfect for shifting that iron. It has a nice padded tongue and collar to ensure comfortability.

The U-form mid-foot wrap means that there is little to no break-in period. Open the box, and you’re ready to lift with no painful adjustment process.

Women's Version

For the women out there looking for a comfortable and flashy Reebok CrossFit shoe, this is your sneaker!

It is a nice human-made shoe with the heal measuring approximately 1.5 inches.

Reebok CrossFit Nano 5 Training Shoe

Reebok Men's CrossFit Nano 5

However, don’t let this cosy shoe fool you though. The Kevlar infused upper makes the Nano 5 incredibly durable while still maintaining enough flexibility to lift freely.

Unlike our first two models, the Nano 5 offers more versatility, allowing CrossFitters to switch from lifting to running without much compromise in either discipline.

A snugger fit, it’s worth considering moving half a size up to ensure you’re getting the best from our number three choice. It offers almost 30 different color schemes to choose from ensuring you'll not only love the quality of the shoe but the quality of the overall look.

Check them out on Amazon by clicking the button below!

Once again, this wonderful shoe offers a great Kevlar infused upper for the ultimate comfort and support to prevent injury. It always provides a nice, soft contact with the foot.

Reebok CrossFit Lifter Plus 2.0

We’ve looked at the Lifter Plus as well as the Lifter Plus 2.0, and with the Lifter Plus 2.0 we return to a more focused weightlifting shoe after the versatility of the Nano 5.0.

Main difference is the U-Form technology that helps set it over the top and also makes it an excellent running equivalent.

Reebok Women's Crossfit Lifter Plus 2.0 Training Shoe

These sturdy, leather powerhouses will make sure you get the most out of your weight training. The flex grooved outsole and anti-friction lining means reduced slippage, both on the mat and within the shoe itself.

The non-compressible heel means you get the most out of your squats, providing greater stability and less wobble at the ankle. The Lifter Plus 2.0 also makes use of the heat-activated U-form technology which means you can begin lifting immediately with virtually no break-in time.

Don't believe me?  Check out the rad video below explaining how the U-Form technology works.

Just like the previous offering, this shoe boasts over 10 excellent designs and color schemes to choose from!

Women’s Version

To date, only 3 different colors to choose from, but they still offer a nice variety to check out. It also offers the excellent heat-activated U-Form Technology and a simple double strap system to make sure they are lightweight and comfortable.

It has an excellent anti-friction lining to ensure comfortably matches its performance.

Weighed Your Options?

With the CrossFit industry growing in popularity from year to year, it’s no surprise that the number and variety of CrossFit shoes has gone up and Reebok is the gold standard in the industry. Our Reebok CrossFit shoes review highlights just some of the range of footwear available online.

Wondering, which shoe appeals to me most?

Well, ultimately this has to be decided by each individual person, but I like the overall look and versatility of the Nano 6.0 shoe as it is also an excellent shoe for running, which I enjoy doing from time to time (and is certainly a part of CrossFit’s Daily WOD workouts).

But the choice is yours and go with the shoe you find most appealing and comfortable!

Ultimately, it’s up to you, the CrossFitter, to decide whether you want a more niche model destined for the weight mat alone, or a CrossFit shoe that you can wear when lifting weights, running miles or scaling the rope.

Once you decide which shoe you like best, please let me know how you like them!

Are CrossFit Shoes Good for Running? A Simple Review

Last Updated: September 19th, 2018

Getting back into shape can be difficult, so having the appropriate type of shoes for the right type of exercise is important.

For those who want to get into the habit of working out on a regular basis, lead an active lifestyle, or are just a tad more ambitious than the general population to get fit (most CrossFitters would be in this category), there might be questions lingering around what types of shoes are deemed the most appropriate for which type of physical activity.

Reebok Women's CrossFit Speed Training Shoe

CrossFit and running both involve arduous physical activity and have different needs as the body is moving in different ways.

CrossFit shoes on the whole are a little heavier on average than running shoes as they must offer top notch support for heavy lifts and squats.

Running shoes generally are lighter and sacrifice some of that heavy duty support.

Generally, we recommend going with CrossFit shoes that are good for running as we believe it is better to wear a little heavier shoe rather than it is to give up necessary support and protection from injury.  CrossFit is famous for this as many people don’t do the lifts correctly or don’t pack the right gear.

That being said, we believe there are several shoes out there that bridge the gap between the CrossFit and running divide and offer premium support and protection without being a hindrance when running.

Want to see a list of the Top CrossFit Shoes in the industry?  We created an excellent Buyers Guide for those looking to take their CrossFit gear to the next level.

What To Look For- Picking the Best Shoes for Crossfit and Running

Personally, unless you are a very serious runner, I think it is best to pick a good lightweight CrossFit shoe that offers the support and then use it for running.

The protection is king in CrossFit and I think it is work it to sacrifice a little weight just to ensure proper support.

So that is why we lean towards finding the best CrossFit shoes that are good for running as opposed to vice versa.

You’ll find that the following criterion of the best CrossFit running shoes also match with those of qualified running shoes- shoes which provide stability, motion control, and comfort.

The best shoes must provide a huge amount of support and stability while being lightweight and durable. During CrossFit training workouts, or WODS as CrossFitters call them, these shoes provide enough absorption and protection for those high box jumps and for when the heel hits the ground when running.

For instance, the Reebok CrossFit Speed training Shoes for men or for women provide durability and flexibility designed for all types of weightlifting and CrossFit workout movements while at the same time have a nice, lightweight low cut design for running.

Having to balance a heavy weight requires putting force into the heel, and good CrossFit shoes provide that stability and support during this movement process. These types of shoes can also provide the same support for running in all types of settings.

Reebok Women's CrossFit Speed Training Shoe

We really liked these CrossFit shoes for running as they have a nice low-cut design and are very lightweight which makes running more tolerable.

It has a nice cushion at the heel making the shock absorption ideal.

A lot of people have found this shoe to be better than the Nano 5 (A CrossFit consumer favorite), as there is nice room around the toes for people with narrow feet.

Despite being the ideal crossover and the weapon of choice for running focused workouts, the shoes offer superb support and stability on heavy lifts like the deadlift.

What To Look For- Picking the Best Running Shoes for Crossfit

For those intense lovers of running, it is probably best to find a good running shoe that provides the right support for CrossFit.

It's important to keep in mind that running shoes are not ideal for heavy lifting due to the lack of stability and fluffiness of a running shoes.  But if you are a light lifter and a frequent runner, than maybe it is best to get good running shoes for CrossFit.

Are CrossFit Shoes Good For Running?

Sometimes Crossfit focuses more on running and sprints as opposed to heavy lifting and when that’s the case it’s better to pick the right shoes to match the activity.

There are running shoes for all types of activities- those for running on the ground or on trails, or for workouts at the gym or treadmill.

In order to understand the world of CrossFit, we have to analyze each type of activity and make sure that we are familiar with the essential elements and needs of each type of shoe. Our goal is to find the right shoe that meets the needs of both running and CrossFit without hurting the other.

First, let’s take a look at the qualifications for the shoes that are perfect for running and for CrossFit. Choosing the right type of shoe is generally based on how much your feet pronates. Pronation is defined by the movement of the foot when it moves inwards as the heel hits the ground.

If there is a lot of overpronation happening with your feet when running (where the shoe parts wear out by the inner corners of your feet), then it is best to purchase shoes that provide stability and motion control.

Meanwhile, if you’re experiencing under-pronation (where the wear patterns are around the outer edges of your feet), then it is best to purchase shoes that have extra cushioning to provide that important extra bit of comfort.

Top 3 Running Shoes for CrossFit

Nike Women's Free 5.0+ Running Shoe

Nike has proven time and time again to be the most reliable brand in the athletic performance industry.

Personally, we love there shoes. They are extremely comfortable and lightweight for running.

However, they are not overly cushiony like basketball shoes and don't seem to be too much of a drawback when used for lifting.

The Nike Free's are the go-to name in running and it is for good reason.  We, likewise, believe you will like them and notice a difference on your next workout.

The Remaining Two

The New Balance 940 V2 and the Adidas Supernova Sequence 7 are examples of running shoes which provide motion control for those who over pronate when exercising and can also provide good support during CrossFit WODs.

All of them share qualities of being lightweight, superiorly cushioned, and durable.

New Balance 940 V2

New Balance Men's M940V2 Running Shoe

New Balance has long been a staple in the running industry.  Why not bust them out for your CrossFit runs?

These shoes provide nice support against pronation and excellent cushioning which crosses over to CrossFit activities well.

Most users have found the ankle support and comfort to be excellent.  With a nice, breathable mesh exterior you are sure to stay cool inside your shoes.

Adidas Supernova Sequence Boost 7 Running Sneaker Shoe - Womens

Adidas is yet another popular running brand.

Although we liked the Nike Free's for running and CrossFit best, we chose the Adidas Supernova Sequence 7 due to the popularity among runners and workout goers alike.

Many people have purchased these shoes multiple times and has seem to really provide the support needed for people with flat feet.

The Supernovas are what they advertise, Super!

Conclusion: Is It A Bad Idea to Use CrossFit Shoes for Running?

Just like humans need air, food, and water, there are shoe quality "essentials" that runners and CrossFitters should keep in mind when they are on the move.

For instance, running shoes need to be durable, lightweight, and comfortable.

Shoes that CrossFitters should wear ideally need to be stable and supportive to provide superb protection to prevent injury. Keeping that in mind, these two types of shoes share similar qualities.

So why buy two different pairs of shoes if you don’t have to?

After examining all types of quality traits and characteristics, let’s go back to the golden question, "Are CrossFit shoes good for running?" The answer is, yes, so long as you pick the right one!

There are certain types of CrossFit shoes that provide ample amount of stability, motion control and comfort for every one of your intense CrossFit workouts and for those long, beautiful trails you’ve always wanted to run (or are running!).

Purchasing these types of double-functioning shoes will save you effort, time, and energy as you do your CrossFit exercises and go for a quick run all in the same workout.

Best CrossFit Shoes in 2019 | Ultimate Review Guide

Last Updated: September 19th, 2019

One of the reasons CrossFit athletes are ripped is because of the variety of the exercises and the versatility of the program. No one WOD is the same.

The level of intensity in CrossFit is almost unparalleled to any other group workout. The lifts are heavier, the movements are more technical, and the strain that you put on your body in one workout is more than anything I have ever done before.

Nike Metcon 2 Cross Training Shoes

It’s terrifying. You might be on a rowing machine until your legs and arms are about to fall off and then go straight into 200-meter sandbag runs.

Simply put, CrossFit is a beast!

But a common concern with CrossFit is the injury risk.

Sure, you can get injured doing any type of exercise or workout routine, but CrossFit injuries seems to be all too common.  As a matter of fact, a recent study reported that nearly 3 out of 4 or 75% of CrossFitters having sustained an injury from working out.

That is the nature of high-intensity training. You have to accept the risks. However, the way to minimize the risk is by wearing the right shoes.  These are a must and not a maybe.

Your feet provide the foundation for your whole body and thus you must have the proper foundation to ensure the rest of your body can handle the exertion of a CrossFit WOD.

Reebok Women's CrossFit Nano 6.0

What To Look For In A CrossFit Shoe - What Did We Rate On?

For those that care, below you will find that categories that we used to rate the industries top CrossFit sneakers.

We believe each of these bullet points are essential when selecting your CrossFit shoes especially as it is no cheap investment. And that’s not even including the amount of money and missed time you save from injuries from wearing the wrong shoes.

If you aren’t interested in our scoring system, skip down to the section bolded: Top 10 CrossFit Shoes Review.

Stability

A good CrossFit shoe will have a sturdy base that makes solid contact with the ground. It’s almost like a tree with roots that are planted into the ground.  Normally, CrossFit shoes have a slight raised heel which increases your overall mobility and allows you to squat deeper.

The flat soles of CrossFit shoes distribute your weight evenly and allow you to effectively drive the weight above your head.

Support

Good support is essential for the heavy lifting in CrossFit. This is the main reason we do not recommend running shoes as they are not built with the same supportive base. There is such a focus on comfortability and lightweightness that this hinders a running shoe from being a good option.

We don’t want to be squatting on a mattress.  Again, running shoes have a tendency to be cushion overload. So we want to make sure that when we are recommending shoes, we are recommending shoes that lock your feet into place during heavy lifts and don't give out on you when you need them most!

Price

Everyone comes into the box with different needs and price point so we wanted to make sure we provided a few home runs for each person’s spending considerations. Many times in our research and testing, we found that the older model or cheaper option provides just as good of support and functionality as the latest and greatest version.

Just like as in textbooks, newer models are sometimes just slight upgrades from the original. We made sure to weed out the options that don’t provide significant value to the user.

Versatility

Best Shoe For CrossFit

The best trainers for CrossFit are ones that can withstand all the rigors of a workout.  A good CrossFit shoe is not limited in any exercise.  Just as in the case of not using running shoes for heavy lifting, it clearly does not make sense to use a bulky Olympic weightlifting show for the sprinting and running portions of CrossFit.  WODs are done for time so it would be futile to switch shoes mid workout.

So when we name our top picks, we most certainly made a preference towards the multidimensional shoes that have the crossover appeal to meet both great mobility and great support & stability.

Cool, Unique Features

This was not the most heavily weighted factor when deciding on the best CrossFit shoes, but it is a factor.

The unique features that some brands have offered really set them apart from the pack. For instance, the zero-drag heel on the Metcons really helps you do handstand pushups and the U-Form technology by Reebok is legit to giving you a nice customized fit right out of the box.

Moreover, just as in life, when a brand takes the time to pay attention to the details in crafting the perfect pair, it is likely that the rest of the shoe is well thought out. Of course, the details make up the whole.

*Bonus Points | Style and Design

How you look plays into how you act. Your style feeds into your comfortability and confidence. And if you’re not confident working out how do you expect to push yourself beyond your limits? So although this was not a main factor, it was taken into consideration.

Moreover, we won’t recommend you something ugly.

Top 10 CrossFit Shoes Review

CrossFit Shoes 2016 Review

You might be wondering, “What are CrossFit shoes?” Or maybe, you see people in the box wearing these unique, flat soled cross training shoes and wonder whether they are even needed and what makes them any different from any other pair of running shoes.

Well, they are quite different than running shoes and provide a level of support and stability that is unmatched by running shoes. So it is very important you pick the right CrossFit shoes to avoid injury, improve the quality of your lifts, and make your feet a little more comfortable!

Nike Metcon 2 Synthetic Trainers

These shoes are the bomb.com.

They have been chosen as our "Top Rated CrossFit shoes for 2020."  They scored significantly higher in terms of support and stability and yet still have the flexibility to handle the aerobic parts of the workouts like the distance runs or rowing exercises.

Nike Women's Metcon 2 Training Shoe

We were extremely pleased with the level of arch support and many testers have noted that this offering is the best on the market for combating planter fasciitis.

It has a nice dual-density foam midsole to provide assistance on heavy lifts and cushion your falls on box jumps. The flat and wide sole, not only caters to those with wide feet, but also is perfect when you are deadlifting or cleaning.

The cherry on top was the attention to detail on the shoe in the many unique features like the zero-drag heel to allow for smooth handstand pushups and the Flyware technology that keeps your foot from moving within the shoe.

Nike Metcon 2 Cross Training Shoes

To top it all off, the overall look and style is considerably better than the other top offerings currently being sold.

This shoe was 100% made for the CrossFitter in mind and it is quickly becoming the top CrossFit shoe on the market today. At a reasonable price, we think you will find these shoes are worth the investment.

Check them out for yourself and see why they are the best CrossFit trainers available.

Reebok CrossFit Nano 6.0 Cross-Trainer

If you watch the CrossFit games or just spend a lot of time at the Box, you will start to find out that Reebok is CrossFits #1 brand.

Reebok CrossFit Nano 6.0

To date, Reebok has invested heavily in the sport of CrossFit and all of the CrossFit branded apparel.

So, as you would expect, they have pumped out some of the best CrossFit sneakers you can buy.

The Nano 6.0 is the latest, upgraded model of the Reebok CrossFit cross-trainer series.

It is a significant improvement from its predecessor as it has a nice anatomical shaped fit and fantastic stability. Many users have found the Kevlar to be much softer and more flexible than the last model, Nano 5.0.

On top of that the tongue and toe area have proven to be more comfortable which makes pumping out those hard core push-ups a cinch.

Overall, Reebok has done it again with another great CrossFit offering with a nice, trendy looking style. For a little more than a hundred bucks, we think you will be more than happy with this pair of Nano 6.0’s.

Nike Men's Free Trainer 3.0 V4 Training Shoe

Nike, once again put out a wonderful, lightweight cross trainer at a somewhat affordable price.

We have found these shoes to be very nice and breathable and particularly liked the versatility in completing a wide range of movements and exercises in a simple fashion.

Overall, we have found these shoes to be excellent in the running aspects, but they did not score as high on the stability and support section when performing heavy lifts.

Regardless, we really like these shoes.

Reebok CrossFit Lifter Plus 2.0 Training Shoe

Overall, we were very satisfied when we analyzed the quality of the CrossFit Lifter Plus 2.0 as this shoe was specifically made for the CrossFitter in mind.

Reebok Women's Crossfit Lifter Plus 2.0 Training Shoe

We loved the low profile design and the stiff heel provided just the right amount of support and stability for heavy lifting. Just about everyone who reviewed these shoes cited a huge improvement on barbell workouts like clean and jerks and squats.

We also loved the anti-friction lining and the neat dual straps that lock your foot into place. But perhaps the coolest feature, and our favorite of them all, was the U-Form technology.

This brilliant technology uses a blowdryer for 2 minutes to heat up the shoes and then when you place your feet inside the shoe, from that point on, have a custom fit shoe!

Most people pay hundreds of dollars for custom fit shoes, but you can have it all with the use of a blowdryer.

Check out the minute and a half video below if you want to see the method behind this brilliant technology.

Beyond all the cool features, this shoe did not ignore the running portion of the workouts as well as it is not to clunky for those 800m runs.

Overall, we found this shoe to be a perfect lifting shoe for CrossFit with the ability to handle the aerobic exercises well.

Adidas Performance Adipure 360 Cross-Trainer

Adidas pumped out an excellent cross training offering which makes it ideal for many different types of workouts.

Adidas Performance Adipure 360

We found that it excelled as a running shoe as it is lightweight and most people have found it to be very comfortable.

Beyond that, it was sold at a very affordable price at the time of review.  Check out the latest price with the appropriate button below.

For those that don’t fit well into Nike or Reebok, or simply enjoy Adidas as a brand, than this is your top shoe to go with.

...The Next Top 5 CrossFit Sneakers

Adidas Performance Adipower Weightlifting Trainer

Best Powerlifting Shoe

Overall, Adidas did not score as high as other leading brands Nike and Reebok, but this one made the top of the list as we found this to be an excellent powerlifter shoe.

Adidas Performance Adipower Weightlifting Shoe

We loved the comfortability and support that this shoe provided on heavy lifts.

However, this pair has its flaws.

Although superb in support and stability for heavy lifts like the deadlift and squat, it’s weakness is in the clunkyness which did not make it an ideal running shoe.

Inov-8 Unisex F-Lite 240 Cross-Training Shoe

Inov-8 has done a nice job of carving out its own little niche within the CrossFit industry.

Inov-8 Women's F-Lite 235 Cross-Training Shoe

This British company delivers on an excellent lightweight and flexible shoe to help take your game to the next level.

Although, this didn’t make our top 5, we loved the versatility of these shoes and the naturalist feel while wearing them.

The minimalist design gave you that comfortable barefoot feeling when performing deadlifts which gives you a full throttle workout.

For those looking to get the max out of their workout, these just might be the shoes for you!

Nike Free Trainer 5.0 Training Shoe

If you are budget conscious we believe these might be the best cross trainers for you.

Nike Free Trainer 5.0 NRG

They were selling mush less than a hundred dollars at the time of the article and have a nice sewn in tongue which you gives you a snugger fit when running.

They are this year's "Best Value" pick.

It’s important to keep in mind, that the Nikes generally run about a half size smaller than other brands and these shoes are a little more narrow than the Metcon 2’s mentioned above.

Once you work them in, we believe you will find them quite comfortable and lightweight for the casual runners out there.

Reebok CrossFit Nano 5 Training Shoe

Reebok did it again with yet another excellent CrossFit shoes.

Reebok Men's CrossFit Nano 5

Although, we found that the newest upgrade scored slightly higher than this older Nano 5 model, we still really enjoyed these shoes.

The shoes are made with a sleek 3mm toe to heel drop which provides excellent stability for the lifting exercises.

The only lacking seems to be the versatility as many users preferred the Nike Metcons for the running portions of the workout. But for the vast majority of the workout and lifting, these shoes are spot on.

Not to mention you can likely buy these at a bit of a discount due to latest model already being out on the market.

Beyond that, you will be the talk of the Box, if you get this rad, patriotic style.

Women’s Version

Just like the men’s version, this shoe offers over 25 different styles and colors to choose from! If you can’t find a color scheme that you like, then maybe there is no hope. : (

Once again, this wonderful shoe offers a great Kevlar infused upper for the ultimate comfort and support to prevent injury. It always provides a nice, soft contact with the foot.

ASICS Men's GEL-Intensity 3 Cross-Training Shoe

Although Asics isn’t a quote on quote heavyweight in the CrossFit industry, we have found there cross training shoes to be perfect for the occasion and provide a nice comfortable fit.

ASICS Men's GEL-Intensity 3 Cross-Training Shoe

They provide a really nice cushion at the heel.

The shoe also uses a wonderful Trusstic system support feature that stability at your heel and locks your feet into place for those oh, so important squats and deadlifts.

These shoes are perfect for the diverse CrossFit movements and users have mentioned that they fit like a glove.

If you are looking for a nice pair of lightweight, but supportive shoes than look no further!

The Best CrossFit Shoes For Flat Feet

Last Updated: September 19th, 2018.

First, the problem. It’s very easy to recognize if you have flat feet, but the impact that this has on your body isn’t always readily recognizable.

Indeed, flat feet cause what is called plantar fasciitis, a pain in the heel that results from the strain of the ligament that supports your arch.

Pes Planus, as flat-footedness is otherwise known, could be caused by an injury or is often inherited from your parents. The lack of that arch support also causes pronation of your ankles, twisting them inward and straining them, as well as your knees, hips, and back.

Nike Womens Metcon 2

All of this probably makes you think you can’t possibly participate in a cross training program such as CrossFit at any sort of effective level without significant pain.

However, there are measures that can be taken to account for your lack of arch support and with the right pair of shoes, the right support system, you may be able to CrossFit with the best of them!

Puma Tazon 6 Cross Training Shoe

They have a bold look with the classic Puma swooshlike design.

With a strong ‘midfoot saddle’ and EVA cushioning on the heel, there is no doubting the comfort and support that these shoes offer.

A slightly heavier shoe, the Tazon was developed with the transition between CrossFit and day to day life in mind.

These are good shoes to be used with running activities, but probably not the best for outdoor trail running. Sleek, comfy, and stable, these shoes offer the perfect arch support and shock absorption people with flat feet need.

Click the link below and see why we rated them our "Best Value" pick.

Reebok Crossfit Nano 5 Training Shoe

It offers a durable Kevlar-infused upper that gives top notch arch support and protection from injury.

Merrell Trail Glove 3

**Honorable Mention**

Best for outdoor trail running, this Merrell offering has a minimalist lightweight design.

Merrell Men's Trail Glove 3 Minimal Trail Running Shoe

Although not a specific CrossFit shoe, and built more like a running shoe, we have headlined these shoes as our "Honorable Mention" due to their minimalist design and outdoor running versatility.

Ultra-lightweight, durable, washable, vegan, and breathable, it isn’t the usual suspect for the best cross trainers for flat feet.

Don’t judge a book by its cover, though, as the Trail Glove 3 has an intricate inner sole cushioning system, ideal for the added strain of flat feet, as well as a 4mm compression molded EVA midsole cushion.

This means that the arch of your foot is well cushioned and supported for those long, off-road runs or other CrossFit activities.

If you are a CrossFitter that loves to run, then this might be the shoe for you.

Conclusion: Picking The Best CrossFit Shoes for Flat Feet

There’s no doubt that having flat feet is a daily struggle, but the right pair of shoes, such as one of our best CrossFit shoes for flat feet listed above, can really help you fight it.

Each one of us is different, which is why the list isn’t a ranking system, but an informative guide; I hope one of the 6 options above proves to have the right support system for your arch’s needs.

The point of all of this is to keep fighting, don’t let your flat feet keep you from staying fit and enjoying whatever intensity cross training activity you want to accomplish!

Address your arches, support them, because science says that it works.

Your flat feet are the result of one specific tendon that isn’t doing its job, so you need to do something for those pesky feet, which will translate into ankle support, and then to the rest of your body.

Pain levels should subside, endurance should increase, and your limits should be boundless!

CrossFit is no joke (as I’m sure you know) and requires intense heavy lifting, high volume squats and deadlifts, and of course running and sprinting among many exercises.

It is essential that you have the right shoes to avoid injury (sadly, sometimes all too common among CrossFitters…).

Before you head to the Box, make sure you have the best shoes to ensure a great workout and keep you from hurting your health long term.

Maybe I’m just optimistic, but as someone who struggles with flat feet, thanks to my father, I know that the right shoe makes all of the difference over time. The right support, changes everything.

5 Best CrossFit Shoes for Men

We tried to add a little variety to our list by providing a few different brands to choose from as each person has a preference towards style and fit.

But without a doubt, and with good reason, Nike and Reebok dominated the group. They have some of the best cross training shoes men can buy.

Just as in athletic performance, they, along with Adidas, seem to be the heavyweights in the CrossFit industry.

Below you will find a concise summary explaining the benefits and features of each pair as well as potential drawbacks (if any). We even gave some good CrossFit shoe options for those guys, like myself, on a budget.

Sometimes it’s worth it to give up buying the latest style and design when you want to keep the cost low.

We hope you like our list of the absolute best cross trainer shoes for men!

Nike Men's Metcon 2 Synthetic Trainers

The Nike Metcon 2 Trainers are the Swiss Army knife of CrossFit and for that reason they have secured their spot as my number one shoe on this impressive list.

Nike Metcon 2 Cross Training Shoes

With a mesh upper and sturdy rubber sole, the Metcon 2 is breathable and stable. This balance of flexibility and grip makes it a perfect choice for both speed training and heavy lifting.

The Flywire mid-foot technology uses supportive filaments within the shoe that functions like cables on a suspension bridge.

The zero-drag heel also limits the likelihood of slippage when lifting and therefore, reduces the risk of injury.

Nike Free Trainer 5.0 NRG

For those dudes on budget, we selected the Nike Free Trainer 5.0 as our pick for "Best Value" Men’s cross training shoes.

Nike Free Trainer 5.0 NRG

These shoes have a narrower fit and no tongue, so CrossFitters with broader feet might struggle with the limited space and adjustability.

Other than that, the Nike Free Trainer 5.0 NRG is a solid shoe with great stability and support.

Despite its lower cost, it doesn’t sacrifice flexibility for sturdiness and should proveto be a very comfortable shoe so long as care is taken when ordering your size.

Adidas Performance Adipower Weightlifting Trainer

This shoe is the workhorse of my list and was made for the powerlifter in you.

Adidas Performance Adipower Weightlifting Shoe

The Adipower Weightlifting Trainer Shoe is a well-structured model with a heel to toe ratio that will improve form when squatting and assist with deadlifts.

Unlike other weightlifting shoes, the toe box opens up with wear, meaning more comfort and breathability.

The considerable stability does mean the Adipower Weightlifting Trainer perhaps isn’t the best choice for running or sprinting and you might want to consider a more flexible shoe for speed workouts.

But for heavy weightlifting and Olympic lifts like the snatch and clean, we most definitely recommend these excellent CrossFit sneakers.

If we were to pick a shoe based purely on weightlifting and the heavy lifting components of a WOD, this beast would more than likely be our pick.

Reebok CrossFit Nano 6.0

Reebok’s Nanos have been named amongst the best cross training shoes for men time and time again, and for good reason.

Reebok CrossFit Nano 6.0

These shoes were formed to handle all different facets of a CrossFit WOD, both the heavy lifting and the fast twitch lateral movements and runs.

The 6.0 is as stable and flexible as its predecessors, but has an updated anatomical design which offers greater locked-in stability.

Super light and with a generous toe box, the Nano 6.0 is perfect for speed workouts, while the sturdy rubber sole provides the grip needed for weightlifting.

The sleek and lightweight design make it our choice for the best all-around shoe. We believe the Nano 6.0 is a nice upgrade over the 5.0 for those that have been satisfied with the Nano line and fit.

Reebok CrossFit Nano 5

Given the Nano’s success as one of the best CrossFit shoes for men, it’s unsurprising a second model has made my list.

Reebok Men's CrossFit Nano 5

With a Kevlar infused upper, the Nano 5 is incredibly durable which means that this shoe isn’t just a great value for your dollars, it also provides much needed protection and support.

Since these shoes are geared towards the CrossFitter, we don’t recommend using these on long runs as the flat sole is not ideal for long distance.

However, for the regular CrossFit runs and sprints, and lateral movements like the box jump, we found these shoes to more than fit the bill.

Honorable Mention

ASICS Men’s Gel-Intensity 3

With so much to choose from, it’s understandably tricky to find the best fit for your CrossFit workouts.

ASICS Men's GEL-Intensity 3 Cross-Training Shoe

And just to muddy the waters more, I couldn’t round off my list without giving an honorable mention to the ASICS Gel-Intensity 3.

We love ASICS running shoes and users have found them to be very comfortable over the years.

We think this is a great cross training shoe option and well worth a mention here.

Time to Choose Your Shoes

With so many options out there, all it takes is a little research for any aspiring or experienced CrossFitter to find the right shoe.

Whether you need a lighter shoe for speed, a sturdier shoe for heavy lifting, or a do-all model that won’t have you changing shoes in the middle of a WOD, I hope my list has provided some promising options.

Nike Metcon 2 Cross Training Shoes

Just remember to first consider what you need for your personal workout style and choose the model that’s going to help you get those all-important results.

Personally, we recommend the Nike Metcon 2 shoes as we believe they have all the features and excels in all facets of a CrossFit workout.

But for those that want to stick with CrossFits top brand and enjoy the prestigious Nano line, we think the latest upgrade, Nano 6.0 is more than worth the purchase.

Reebok CrossFit Nano 6.0

We believe you will notice a difference in your next WOD with these shoes and I can honestly say I have!

Gone are the days of trying to push through heavy lifts on my old fluffy foldables.

Now the only thing missing is the motivation.
